I never knew my father's younger sister Käthe, who fell ill and died of jaundice in Palestine in 1942, the year before I was born. Earlier that year, in response to a recruiting advertisement in a newspaper, she tried to join the British Army.

The advertisement, her application and the replies she received shed a little brief light on her life and times.
